6:25 pm - A note of thanks

fireandice_67
Many years ago (about 12, I think) I was interested in the SCA. So I called up the local group (the Barony Bordermarch) and spoke to someone there who seemed happy to speak with me. Forgive me, the name escapes me now, however, she was very pleasant and seemed genuinely accepting of newcomers. She invited to me to be her guest at a Twelfth Night Event.
I remember renting a costume and bringing a desert. I was so excited. When I got there, I was quite surprised when I was relieved of my basket and escorted to the building. It was a very memorable evening. I had so many questions and my companion was more than happy to answer them all.
I have since moved away from the Kingdom (although my heart is still there). After a long absence from the SCA, I looked into the local group here. I truly miss the hospitality of Ansteorra!
Thank you for the warm and memorable welcome!

5:34 pm - Ger/Yurt for Sale

littlepasht
Includes: heavy duty central ring, stout roof poles, heavy lattice, door frame, airline cable cord, a circular 13" floor tarp, walls, roof and roof cover, ropes and extra hardware.

The walls/roof are a tan plasticized canvas and extremely waterproof. The roof has a central, open air hole with a clear plastic "sky light" and additional cover. The door flap closes with a zipper and the walls attach directly to the roof with velcro, so there is no need for belly bands. The velcro and zipper cannot be seen from the outside of the tent as they are covered with flaps.

This ger has seen a few wars now and has withstood heavy rain and strong winds.
It currently resides at the GulfWars site where we will be selling it there. We are ready and willing to assist with the initial setup at the handoff.
Selling for $1000 - cash, cashiers check or money order

There are rumors of a pair of Ansteorans whose motor home broke down in southern Humboldt county.

Seeing as that Malka and I now live about an hour north of where they are reputed to have broken down, I'm trying to confirm the rumor to see if we can offer aid and comfort.

Please get in touch with me if you have any information!

12:49 pm - Passing of one of our own.

drparadox
The Lady Elizabeth Dabernoune passed away the evening of Oct. 6th, at approximately 6:18pm of cardiovascular complications. She went into the hospital on Oct. 3rd, and her heart stopped on the afternoon of the sixth. They spent over an hour trying to revive her, but there was nothing to be done.

Lady Elizabeth had been unable to play on a regular basis for some time due to health issues, but she did make it a point to attend Steppes' 12th night every year and was part of the winning team for the table decorating contest for the last 3 years.

She is survived by her husband, son, two daughters and three grandchildren, and a host of us who were friends and adopted family, and she will be sorely missed.

May the Dream carry you safe to distant shores, our beloved friend.

For Honor and the Dream,
Lord Fearadhach MacCongail MecRaudri

Please excuse a shameless plug for those interested, as the SCA is filled with folks that enjoy reading books...

http://community.livejournal.com/historybookclub/

I made a new LJ community for those of us who like to read and make discussions on historical non-fiction and historical fantasy books - especially books in period for the SCA - as I could not find an appropriate community to otherwise join for such a thing.

If you are interested, please join and share your comments about your favority history books!

4:47 pm - The Small Wars Proposal

spearweasel
Dearest Noble Lords and Ladies of Ansteorra,

Historically speaking, mundane nobles were often a rapacious, greedy, bloody-minded, petty lot. They squabbled over land, titles, power, wealth, personal slights, sport, what have you. In my limited time in our society, I have observed that the various Great Lords of the realm all possess frightfully good manners, and are loathe to raise even the lightest of harsh words against one another. They uniformly covet nothing more than a good name, and the respect of their peers. This makes it possible to travel throughout Ansteorra in safety, true. Given that the year's progress is dominated by numerous small colleges and tournaments, feasts, and the like, this is a good thing. But I believe we are missing out on something vital, something invigorating and martial. I would like to offer a small adjustment to how things are done, to introduce a bit of pretend chaos and drama to our kingdom.

I propose regional "small wars". The Great Lords of each of the high-population areas... the Barons around Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, et cetera should be having daytrip-accessible battles on odd weekends when schedules permit, with the baronies and shires of surrounding communities joining in as they like.

The basic idea is deceptively simple - two large groups or regions that are relatively close to one another, but not adjacent neighbors (think Austin and San Antonio, or Houston and San Antonio for example) would "declare war" over some imaginary grievance that could be agreed to in advance and played up at court, just for fun.

The lords would then decide on a place and time, say, some small town between the two. They would also agree on victory conditions, battle rules, whatever... all of that in advance, online - perhaps on a web page for that particular fight. Someone reserves the use of that park, clearing it with local authorities as appropriate. Before the fight, both sides would jockey for allies and fighters, trying to rope the various smaller groups in the surrounding region into supporting one side or another, and doing it all online so all can see and thus enjoy the shenanigans.

On the appointed day both sides show up, fight, and then a feast would follow, be it BBQ at the local joint, or Denny's. The winners get some bogus title as the “new lords of Generic Village”. Losers have to buy the brisket, and must now pretend to be sorely aggrieved which gives casus belli for next month’s bloody skirmishing!

I am certainly not the first person to suggest such a thing. These wars would be small and sloppy, and often quite informal, but I expect they would be quite enjoyable for all involved. I think it would fill a niche in the event lineup for those of us who love battles, but often can’t travel to the major wars for one reason or another.

7:32 am - Introductions

sayyida_naima
guess I'll do the introducing as well since I just found this community :)

I am Naima bint Rashid al-Andalusiyya, my persona currently resides in Malaga Spain at the height of the Muslim Empire in Europe.  The year for me is 915 and I am of Spanish Moor Descent.  My father Rashid is a trader and sails the Mediterranean sea trade route.  I am the Captain of my husbands ship the HMS Black Rose, she is a fast track trading vessel that is under contract to the Caliph should he need us for conflict.  All I needed to learn about sailing I learned from my father as a child as I "stowed" away spending much of my youth with him at sea.

I am active in the SCA with target archery and am hoping to further my skills and add to my persona with Rapier.

I reside in the Barony of Bjornsborg along with my husband Nasir al-Fayyid and I am currently the Baronial Historian.
Although we've lived in the kingdom going on 4years, i have just recently started a live journal and that is where I discovered this community.

10:25 pm - Coming Back- a Re-Introduction

belle_vivre
Dont really know if I count as a newbie, but my husband is. I 'kinda sorta' was a part of Bryn Gwlad in Ansteorra from 2003-2005, but after splitting up with an ex boyfriend, and an unfortunate incident involving a waaay too generous host at a baronial event and the subsequent drunken bellydance, I have to admit i have been absent for the past three years or so. My husband frequented renaissance faires even before he knew me, so that is what we have continued to do, but i miss the educational aspect of things...

My cousin, who is active in (I think) Sea Winds, is moving to the Ffynnan Gath area this summer, and we also happen to be building a house which will also make that shire a short drive for us... i hope to get my husband involved, and hopefully get back in the swing of things as I wasnt before!

So, there we go for an intro!

Your moost assured frynd

4:33 pm - East Asian Personae List of Ansteorra

spearweasel
Greetings!

My name is Kamaitachi no Kansuke, known to some as "Spearweasel". I can be found in the Barony of Bryn-Gwlad. I am interested in gathering names, locations, and contact information from Ansteorrans playing personae that hail from East Asia: China, Japan, Korea, or various Central Asian groups - Mongol, Uighur, and so forth. You may think of this as a crude census if you like, so that all of us can get a clearer picture of how many such players are actually out there. I have already placed a website online, at the URL below:

http://www.brassbricks.com/sca/east_asian_personae_main.htm

Because there are already plenty of email groups in existence, this will not be used in that capacity. It will primarily be used to foster a sense of community and solidarity among its members. In my experience, there are many more of us out there than most are aware of, but there has been seemingly little concerted effort to bring everyone together in one place. It is my fondest wish that this project will help in some minute way. If you are interested, please provide me with the following information.

* Persona Name and Titles
* Mundane Name
* Location (SCA or Mundane)
* Brief Persona Background (nationality, origin, et cetera)
* Email Address (or other preferred contact method)

If you have pictures, or a website that you'd like linked to, please include those as well. I have not decided on a format for individual entries yet, as that will depend largely on the sort of response I get. Finally, I ask that you pass this message along to other email lists or communities that you think might be interested.

Please contact me at your convenience at spearweasel@yahoo.com

Humbly,
Kamaitachi no Kansuke
aka "Spearweasel"
